Sewing Circles at Curiosity Studio: Looking to gain new skills and support a healthy planet in the new year? Curiosity Studio’s sewing circles present an opportunity to reshape how we view consumption and capitalism and their roles in our daily lives and closets. Curiosity Studio’s founder Lauren Callis will provide a deep dive on the clothing cycle and its ecological consequences, and will teach participants different techniques for mending clothes using scrap fabric. Attendees also have the option of bringing a garment with holes, rips, or stains they would like to preserve. These classes are made possible at this year’s Great Northern Festival. Art Shanty Projects 2023: Inspired by pop-up ice fishing villages, the annual Art Shanty Projects tasks artists to use a frozen lake as a public platform to create a temporary, interactive community. A highlight of this year’s event is sure to be Climate Walk on Ice, in which local performance artists the Fashion Disasters represent climate catastrophes in vibrant, moving forms with an over-the-top, upcycled fashion show, a climate solidarity anthem and a climate walk on ice with local environmental activists. Babes & Brunch Workshop with WAAM: Local jewelry brand Larissa Loden’s flagship store hosts local maker WAAM Industries for this beginner-friendly workshop with brunchy bites and sips. Olio Vintage: New vintage collective store, Olio Vintage, is a unique collective of specialty vintage retailers brought together under one roof in Northeast Minneapolis. Black Garnet Books: The only Black-owned bookstore in Minnesota, community member Dionne Sims launched Black Garnet Books two years ago online in direct response to state violence and to address racial inequality within the publishing and literary industries.
