The Shopping List MSP: 5/18–5/24

Beginning Monday, 5/18, Governor Walz has allowed the Stay at Home order expire in Minnesota, replacing it with the Stay Safe MN order. That means retailers, from small boutiques to malls, are now allowed to be open for in-person shopping, as long as they have adopted and implemented a COVID-19 Preparedness Plan including social distancing guidelines for workers and customers, and allow no more than 50% of the establishment’s occupant capacity at any time.

5/21 UPDATE: Minneapolis Mayor Frey has announced that masks will now be required in all indoor public places, including retailers, in the city of Minneapolis.

Ergo Floral in St. Paul reopens for business this week with social distancing measures in place.

Ergo Floral in St. Paul reopens for business this week with social distancing measures in place.

What that means:

  • Store associates and shoppers are encouraged (but not required) to wear gloves and cloth face coverings, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Different retailers have different rules, so be sure to check ahead of time if you have concerns.

  • Proactive cleaning protocols as recommended by the CDC, which include wiping down common areas and surfaces, such as door handles, shopping carts and baskets, keypads and register counters; register plexiglass shields, floor markers 6 feet from registers; and earlier closings, in order to provide adequate time for cleaning protocols. Safety and social distancing procedures will differ from store to store, so be sure to check with a store to find out what they’re doing to keep shoppers safe before going in.

  • At malls, touch-screen maps are turned off and common areas are closed. As of Monday, Rosedale Center, Ridgedale Center and Galleria in Edina will reopen; Mall of America will not open until June 1 (although several stores are offering curbside pickup—visit mallofamerica.com for a running list). Keep in mind that not all stores within the malls are reopening; visit their websites for a running list and updated hours.

However, many independent boutiques are planning on staying closed for the time being, offering shipping and curbside pickup instead. Meanwhile, COVID-19 cases and deaths only continue to increase with dozens more fatalities reported over the weekend as the confirmed case count eclipsed 15,000.

Most stores that are open will continue offering curbside pickup and shipping, too. Walz said he expects to have a similar set of guidelines in place for bars, restaurants, salons and barbershops to allow those businesses to reopen June 1. That plan will be presented to the public no later than May 20.

Find a partial list of independent boutiques that will be reopening with social distancing guidelines this week below. But first:

VIRTUAL HAPPENINGS:

That being said, much of the action is still online. Here are the top virtual shopping happenings of the week:

MPLS Craft Market has gone virtual. The pop-up marketplace recently launched a digital marketplace featuring hundreds of handmade goods from dozens of local makers. Support small businesses from the comfort of your couch, at shop.mplscraftmarket.com. New items will be added daily.

Walker Art Center’s spring Jewelry & Accessory Makers Mart has gone virtual with more than a dozen makers including ROX Jewelry, Dottir Jewelry, Wazo Designs and Makwa Studio. The sale is now available to shop through June 14 at walkerart.org.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Mill City Farmers Market has discontinued its art market (of which I'm on the committee) for the season. Fortunately, you can still shop their curated group of makers with its new Digital Art Market. Each week, it will feature four to five local artisans each week on their blog, Instagram stories @mcfarmerskt and through a new digital art market email newsletter. You can find unique gifts, kitchenware and other handmade items. This week’s picks include Adam Gruetzmacher ceramics, Maat Mons bags and soft goods, Matthew Krousey Ceramics, Redcruiser illustrated stationery and home goods, and Vikse jewelry. View the blog and sign up for the newsletter at millcityfarmersmarket.org

Artesota presents “Looking Glass: An Instagram Live Art Market” beginning this weekend with limited-edition, handcrafted goods by top local makers like Runi Clay Studio, Mezamé Designs and Studio Ok Ok and more. Different makers will be featured throughout the sale’s run daily 5/22–5/30 via @artesota on Instagram.

Reserve your spot for the free replay of Queen Anna’s master class, “Style for Days: Defining Your Style,” taking place on Saturday, 5/23, at 11am. Sign up at the link on their Instagram account, @queenannaliving.

A Quarantine-Era Guide to Being a More Mindful, Ethical Shopper & Making Your Clothing Last

Fashion Revolution Week, which takes place every year during the last week of April, is a global initiative that campaigns for a clean, safe, fair, transparent and accountable fashion industry. As the world faces the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization’s ongoing #LovedClothesLast movement is especially prescient. It encourages us to use our increased days indoors to care for our clothes better, mending and making clothing, and adopting a mindset of longevity when it comes to our wardrobes—opting to invest in better-quality garments instead of fast fashion. That means mending and removing stains from your clothes, shaving your sweaters, and polishing your shoes. Here are some ideas for increasing the longevity of your clothing and accessories, with some recommended local resources.

Image via Science & Kindness

Image via Science & Kindness

1. Get your stuff repaired. Well-made clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry and other accessories are often worth the cost to repair them. That’s one reason I often turn to vintage and secondhand designer goods.

  • Learn how to do a couple simple stitches via an online tutorial. Visible mending has become a trend lately, so you don’t have to worry about something showing its wear. Shaving sweaters using a sweater shaver is a great way to make them look good as new, and some shoe polish is also a great way to touch up leather bags and shoes.

  • Repair Lair specializes in fixing outdoor clothing and camping equipment via mail. Learn more at repairlair.com

  • Science & Kindness, which specializes in visible denim repairs, is taking mail orders. Learn more at https://www.instagram.com/scienceandkindness/?hl=en on Instagram.

  • Jewelry designer Stephanie Lake Design is offering new services including jewelry repair and customization for customer-owned jewelry. Inquire via DM or www.stephanielakedesign.com.

  • Greenwich Vintage Co. is now offering local pickup and delivery in the Twin Cities for classic repair, recrafting and resoling of men’s and women’s footwear. Prices for shines start at $20. Call 612-310-0373, visit their website at https://greenwichvintage.us/ or connect with the brand on social media.

2. Get your stuff cleaned—the right way.

  • Hand wash and line dry as much as possible. It’s gentler on your clothing, and makes it last longer. (Heat can really do a number on natural fibers.) I swear by Oxy Clean powder to get whites bright again. (Just be careful using it on anything that could color-bleed.) Spraying musty-smelling clothing (like vintage) with a spray bottle filled with vodka and using Dawn dish soap for stains are some other good tricks.

  • Mona Williams owner Patric Richardson, aka The Laundry Evangelist, is an incredible local resource for laundry and stain removal. He even has a new book coming out later this year! For now, you can order his laundry supplies at monawilliams.com and follow their Facebook page for upcoming virtual Laundry Camps.

  • New tailoring and sewing lounge RETHINK Tailoring and Sewing Lounge is accepting dropoff repairs. They also specialize in upcycling and reusing discarded garments, and they also offers basic sewing tutorials. Check them out at rethinktailoring.com and @rethinktailoring on Instagram.

3. Upcycle your old clothes by altering, dyeing or customizing them.

  • As many are in quarantine, it's no surprise that DIY tie-dye is making a splash right now. Since we can't go out and shop for something new, it's inspiring many to try to simple yet multi-step technique to bring a pop of color and pattern to your look.

  • Now’s also a good time to learn to mend and alter your own clothing. A Google search will give you some leads on virtual sewing workshops.

  • Add some flair to an old denim jacket by getting some customized embroidery from local makers like Dinosaur Hampton, Stephanie Vos and Sarah Sequoia.

4. If you’re going to buy new, try to buy sustainably and ethically from small brands, makers and retailers. It may not be possible to only shop sustainably, but whatever you do, be mindful about what you buy. Now’s a good time to think about your wardrobe holistically, and find well-made pieces that will last, and items that you will want to wear next year (and the year after)—so they’re less likely to end up in a landfill.

5. Get unused clothing back into the clothing ecosystem by donating or reselling it. With many of us spending more time at home, now is the perfect time to go through your closet and edit, edit, edit. Pull out a piece and ask it the question posed by Marie Kondo—does this bring me joy? If not, pull it out—and make space for something new. But it’s important to part with unwanted items ethically.

  • Save a pile of items to sell at a garage sale and a pile of better-quality pieces to consign at a local store or put on Depop, eBay or Poshmark. I like the idea of reselling items directly because it ensures those items are going straight into someone else’s closet and will (hopefully) be well-loved and well-worn.

  • Donating can be a great way to give back. However, not all donations end up going onto the sales floor. The U.S. alone sends about 21 billion pounds of textile waste to landfills every year. And sadly, only 10-15% of donated clothing actually ends up in the secondhand market. National charities like Goodwill and the Salvation Army get more donations than they can handle, so much of it is packed up and re-sold overseas or sent to landfills.

  • One way to avoid that is to donate items to a specific organization that will carefully select items they want, like Harriet’s Closet from Tubman, which offers outfit styling and clothing at no cost for in-need clients, and locally-based thrift stores.

Have you done some spring cleaning and looking to donate your goods? Here is an updated listing of places where you can currently donate used goods:

  • The new Sidewalk Swap project was set up by a South Minneapolis resident to help keep clothes moving through the fashion ecosystem. The concept is simple: Bring a piece to swap in for every piece you take. Want to swap by can’t because of health or accessibility? Usually open daily, weather permitting.

Art-A-Whirl 2020 Goes Virtual

This weekend is Art-A-Whirl, but things are decidedly different this year. For 25 years, NEMAA's AAW has been the largest open-studio tour in the country with more than 800 artists in every medium at more than 60 locations in NE Minneapolis.

So many of these artists rely on Art-A-Whirl sales every year to keep their business running, so consider supporting them if you can. Visit nemaa.org/art-a-whirl at 5pm to get all the details.

This weekend marks opening day for the NE Farmers Market. But things are a bit different this year—new measures will be taken to help keep people and food safe. That means wearing a mask, no mingling, come solo, maintain a distance of six feet from others, no on-site consumption of food, and a no-touch policy of the products for sale. Preorders are also available. Saturday 9am–1pm @ 629 2nd St NE, Mpls. Visit https://www.facebook.com/events/703858403474428/ for more info.

The Mill City Farmers Market is also back—albeit in a different form due to the COVID-19 outbreak (and sadly, without the artisan market). Because the State of Minnesota considers farmers markets essential grocery providers, the long-running market plans to remain open to serve the community and support its local farming partners every Saturday beginning this weekend through October, unless otherwise directed by officials. But this means shopping safelythere will be special social distancing guidelines in place that shoppers must follow. Be sure to visit the Mill City Farmers Market website before heading to the market at millcityfarmersmarket.org/covid-19.

Spring Closet Makeover Tips + GIVEAWAY!

With many of us spending more time at home, now is the perfect time to go through your closet and edit, edit, edit. Pull out a piece and ask it the question posed by Marie Kondo—does this bring me joy? If not, pull it out—and make space for something new! Read below for some of my top closet reorganization tips AND for details about an amazing giveaway we’re doing at Rosedale Center this week:

IMG_5477.JPG
  • Give your closet a seasonal flip every six months. I go through my closet every spring and fall, putting the past-season items in storage or flipping them to the very back of my closet. Then, I pull out my current season items and go through them, piece by piece. Not seeing them for six months gives me fresh eyes, making it easier to decide whether I’m excited to wear that piece again or I’m over it.

  • Do an inventory. As you’re going through your closet, you’ll notice redundancy as well as the holes in your wardrobe. Do you have two pairs of very similar pants you can wear interchangeably? Get rid of the lower-quality pair or the pair that doesn’t fit you as well. Are you realizing you could really use a navy blazer? Take notes so you know what to look for when you go shopping.

  • Divide and conquer. Divide items up into a pile for donations or to save for a garage sale, a pile of better-quality pieces to consign or put on Poshmark, and a pile for items that need to be mended, altered or cleaned.

  • Organize by how often you wear items. Keep the items you wear on an everyday basis (like work clothes) within easiest reach, and special occasion outfits tucked away.

  • Invest in a new closet system. If your closet just isn’t working for you, it might be time to find a closet system. California Closets, which I am collaborating with on a closet display at Rosedale Center, is a great resource. Currently, they’re offering free virtual consultations with their experts. Due to stay-at-home orders, installation services are on hold, but you can design now and install later (or install yourself).

  • Add a few new spring pieces—mindfully. As you go through your wardrobe, you may want to think about a few fun things to add for spring. There’s no better mood-booster for me than buying a new piece that I love. But as we’ve all slowed down, it’s a good time to be more mindful about new purchases. Now’s a good time to think about your wardrobe holistically, and find the pieces you truly love that you will want to wear next year (and the year after).

  • Get dressed to WFH in style. If you’re anything like me, you’re doing a lot of Zoom video calls, so you’ll want to think about styling yourself from the chest up. Right now, I’m loving bright patterns and colors, fun earrings and bright lip colors—which really pop on Zoom video calls. I’m also leaning toward pieces that offer comfort while still looking polished. After many days in leggings and sweatpants at the beginning of the stay-at-home orders, I’m wanting to wear “normal” clothes again, albeit with a bit more comfort in mind. I’m really loving the pajama-inspired floral suit I’m wearing in the above photo I got at Target, paired with colorful yarn earrings by local brand Perennial. That being said, with all this time in the house, I finally splurged on fancy pajamas, a robe and slippers, plus an elevated sweatsuit. Caftans and light sundresses are another great option for comfort around the house in the summer. I’m also living in my loose-fit vintage high-waisted Levi’s.

GIVEAWAY TIME!

To give you your spring wardrobe a makeover, Rosedale Center is giving away a $100 gift card to Von Maur at Rosedale Center and a $500 gift card for California Closets MN. Von Maur Rosedale is among the stores launching curbside pickup this week, so it’s a great time to use that gift card. (You must live within 45 minutes of California Closets' Bloomington HQ to enter.) Contest runs today through May 11. To enter and get more details, visit Rosedale Center’s Facebook page.

Have some donations ready? Arc’s Value Village will reopen its donation drop-off service on Sunday, May 10 with some new requirements. Make donations between the daily hours of 10am–6pm at their back donor drive-through and remain in your vehicle. All donations must be pre-sorted at home into clothing and housewares and transported in a sturdy bag or box marked "Arc." Their staff will unload your vehicle and your donation receipt will be left for you in your trunk or back seat. Visit www.arcsvaluevillage.org for details and locations.

HAPPENINGS THIS WEEK:

It’s Fashion Revolution Week! The global initiative campaigns for a clean, safe, fair, transparent and accountable fashion industry. Here are some local resources to check out:

  • Repair Lair specializes in fixing outdoor clothing and camping equipment via mail. Learn more at repairlair.com

  • Science & Kindness, which specializes in visible denim repairs, is taking mail orders. Learn more at https://www.instagram.com/scienceandkindness/?hl=en on Instagram.

(Heads up: He’s currently looking for stories about stains on sentimental textiles for a new, national television series—find out more at facebook.com/monawilliams.)

  • Tailoring and sewing lounge RETHINK Tailoring is currently pivoting its operations to focus on making face masks for medical professionals, but keep your eyes peeled to its Instagram account @rethinktailoring, where it offers basic sewing tutorials.

  • Have some jewelry laying around in need of repair? Jewelry designer Stephanie Lake Design is offering new services including jewelry repair and customization for customer-owned jewelry. Inquire via DM or www.stephanielakedesign.com.

  • Threaded is a great resource for learning about sustainable, ethical makers and brands in Minnesota and the Midwest. (They also hosted an official Fashion Revolution Week virtual event over the weekend, Shaping Fashion.) Check them out at @wearethreaded on Instagram and wearethreaded.org.

  • Find out about this week’s virtual Fashion Revolution Week happenings across the U.S. at @fash_rev_midwest_usa and @fash_revusa on Instagram.

This week, All Are Welcome Here—the philanthropic small business behind the iconic “All Are Welcome Here” signs—is hosting a virtual silent auction to benefit NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Minnesota, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults with mental illnesses and their families. It features goods donated by more than 100 local makers and artists, coordinated in part by maker hub Minneapolis Craft Market. Highlights include a style session from Cake Plus-Size Resale, a summer accessories pack and gift card from Glam Diggers Vintage and a stacking ring set from Everthine Jewelry. View the auction and bid on items now through Monday, 4/27, at www.32auctions.com/alltogetherauction

Nani Nalu Beachwear is making it easy to shop for swimwear in the comfort of your own home. The 50th & France boutique has just launched SUITCASE, a remote swimwear shopping service. How it works: Sign up to receive a suitcase of hand-selected items based on your "swim style" profile. You will have three days to try items on, then you ship back whatever you don't want—and only pay for what you keep. You will be connected with the store's fit experts the entire time for adjustment tips, color options, fit tricks and more. Learn more and sign up at naninaluswim.com/suitcase.

These are strange and anxious times for us all, but especially for those who work in the service industry. A lot has changed in a week as the reality of the coronavirus COVID19 pandemic set in—all local shopping events for the foreseeable future have been canceled, and local retailers, restaurants, artists and performers, and other small businesses are starting to feel the strain caused by the coronavirus outbreak. Here are some ways you can help out:

  • Shop online + virtually. Even if they don’t have an online store, many stores offer delivery (many offering free and same-day local delivery). Many shops and makers are also hosting virtual shopping events on their Instagram story. (More on those below.)

  • Buy a gift card to use later. This will help stores stay on their feet now, and you can wait to shop until it’s nicer outside.

  • Make a social post & leave positive reviews. Show your support and spread the love any way you can!

  • All salons and beauty studios will be closed until May 2. Support them by purchasing a gift card, booking your next appointment, and shopping products from their e-commerce stores.

WEDNESDAY–SATURDAY:

Z Amore Store Closing Blowout Sale: The Northeast vintage store is shuttering this weekend after one last big sale. I personally checked out the sale last weekend, and there’s still several racks packed with great fashion finds spanning the decades plus some housewares, all priced at 50–75% off everything (with most prices around $5–$15). Following the sale, look for the vintage seller to pop up at local markets and online with the same great vintage. Wednesday–Friday 11am–5pm & Saturday 10am–4pm @ Z Amore, 3303 Central Ave NE, Mpls

THURSDAY:

The Violet Hour Launch Party: Celebrate the debut of The Violet Hour, a new lifestyle blog by local writer Kara Nesvig, at this party hosted by designer resale boutique, June. The blog highlights vintage clothing care and sustainability tips, among a variety of other topics around guilty pleasures, high glamour and low culture. Sip violet cocktails, shop a pop-up from On the Shelf Jewelry, enjoy a beauty moment with Maritza from HAUS Salon (7–8pm only), shop June’s beautifully curated selection of designer resale and make connections. In another nod to reuse and sustainability, attendees are asked to bring unused, unopened beauty and grooming products to donate to local homeless shelters. Can’t make it? Donation collection continue through January. Thursday 6–9pm @ June, 3406 Lyndale Ave S, Mpls

Third Thursday: Made in Minnesota: The Minneapolis Institute of Art is partnering with Make MN Magazine for this month’s edition of Third Thursday, celebrating the magazine’s latest issue and welcoming local makers and artists for live demos throughout the museum.
