Twin Cities Style & Shopping: Small Business Weekend 2021

This weekend is the holiday shopping kickoff known as Black Friday, but around here we celebrate shopping small over doorbuster big-box deals. Small Business Saturday was created as a shop-small counterpoint, encouraging shoppers to put their holiday dollars into small, local retailers and businesses. There’s a metric ton of shopping events happening in the Twin Cities this weekend, including in-store events and holiday makers markets—and I’ve curated the best of them below.

HAUS Salon's Annual Holiday Retail Sale
Locally owned salon HAUS’s biggest retail sale of the year is here. Save 20% off your favorite shampoo, conditioner, styling products, skincare and more during the sale. FORAGE announces closing 
The East Lake Street shop just announced that December 31 will be the store’s last day of business at their brick-and-mortar. When it was founded ten years ago as Forage Modern Workshop, the store quickly become a favorite for those whose personal mantra is “shop local.” Over the years, the Lake Street storefront has sold handmade products from Minnesota makers and vintage finds, as well as modern furniture. More recently, the shop scaled down to focus on gifts, handmade goods, and art. Until its closing, be sure to stop in and shop—they’re currently packed with unique gifts for the holidays. Indigenous Artist Showcase: Buckanaga Social Club
Head up to Grand Casino Hinckley this weekend for a pop-up featuring the beautiful fashions of Buckanaga Social Club, a collective of Indigenous Minnesotan artists and designers. The Gold Show: Floss Gallery Grand Opening

Bachman's Winter Wonderland Ideas & Inspiration Night
Get inspired for holiday decorating and party decor with this evening of shopping, seminars, refreshments and light bites, and inspiration stations showcasing the latest holiday trends. The Get Down Coffee Grand Opening Weekend
Six months after debuting a line of coffee products, The Get Down is opening its first retail coffee bar on Black Friday. Located within the new Houston White HQ in the Camdentown neighborhood, The Get Down is the brainchild of Houston White, founder of his namesake lifestyle brand and barbershop Houston White Men’s Room, a hub for the Camden neighborhood's Black community. The brand has a mission to bring Black-owned, specialty coffee to North Minneapolis and help build a thriving community meeting place alongside White’s recently rebranded FRESH Barbershop. Excelsior Christkindlsmarkt
Downtown Excelsior will be once again be transformed into a German-style open-air holiday market for two weekends this season during the annual Excelsior Christkindlsmarkt. Put on something warm and enjoy holiday foods and entertainment, decor and gift shopping and festive warm beverages. You can also get a picture with Santa, who’ll be enclosed in a COVID-friendly, life-size ornament. Plucked! Markets is hosting its first annual #SHOPSMALL event, a 2-day marketplace supporting local artisans, makers and creators. Plucked! is a new market concept founded last year by local entrepreneur Becky Sturm that features changing themes and locations spotlighting local entrepreneurs launching new products and services. The long-in-the-works Dayton's Project in downtown Minneapolis is now open with a seasonal makers market—just in time for holiday nostalgia for Dayton’s to kick in. The Departments at Dayton's features more than 30 local vendors on the first floor of the Dayton’s building. Vendors include Larissa Loden jewelry and Karen Morris Millinery, plus several Native American- and Indigenous-owned makers and artists.
