Papier at American Swedish Institute
A juncture between art and fashion, Papier is an international touring exhibition showcasing artist-designer Bea Szenfeld’s striking paper couture—dresses and other sculptural fashion items made entirely from paper and worn by such pop icons as Lady Gaga and Björk—united with artist-author Stina Wirsén’s evocative and colorful illustrations. Papier has made its Midwest debut at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis (in one of only two U.S. stagings). Get a first look and read more about my visit to the exhibit on my blog HERE! Now open: LEGACY
After designer resale shop June announced its move to 50th & France, we wondered what was coming to its former storefront near Lyndale & Lake in Uptown. June’s little sister store features a fresh, more casual mix of brands, more vintage goods, and a lower price-point than June, similar to that of most vintage stores. Now open. Hours: Wednesday–Saturday 11am–5pm @ 3406 Lyndale Ave S, Minneapolis, 612-545-7470, instagram.com/shoplegacystore

Now open: Dugo pop-up at Nolan Mains

At least that’s the case with Dugo, the locally owned, special-occasion retailer that had announced it would permanently close its longtime Galleria storefront. It will be setting up shop at the new Nolan Mains development at 50th & France. They’re now open within a 825-square-foot, temporary pop-up space there while their new permanent storefront is built out. According to MSP Mag, “expect a tighter, more focused selection of what Nancy knows best: dresses and evening separates and the accessories that accompany—like handbags and jewelry—plus, a special, rotating schedule of pop-ups of more casual wear and contemporary brands.” Hours: Monday–Saturday from 11am–5pm (closed 4/5–4/8) @ 3919 Market St, Edina, dressupgoout.com

For local designer resale store, June, that means shuttering its original Lyndale Avenue location for a new storefront at 50th and France. Look for an opening announcement with more details this week @juneresale on Instagram. Cleaning Expert Patric Richardson Comes to Discovery Plus in New Series The Laundry Guy

Fresh off the recent release of his debut book Laundry Love: Finding Joy in a Common Chore, Twin Cities–based laundry expert Patric Richardson is front the center of a new series that will be streaming on discovery+ and broadcast on HGTV. The Laundry Guy’s premise is that Richardson will help show that hope is not lost for cherished items once considered unsalvageable. The series follows Patric as he listens to clients’ meaningful stories behind irreplaceable pieces, from wedding dresses and baby blankets to stuffed animals and vintage coats, and then carefully restores the items to mint condition.

Throughout the season, Patric brings new life to his clients' most precious possessions, including removing stains from a decades-old denim three-piece suit and cleaning a 1930s-era child's coat and hat.

He also provides solutions for other common problems with garments, such as removing stains, reviving fading colors and treating the most delicate fabrics without sending them to the dry cleaners. In addition to mending the pieces, Patric offers families the expert knowledge and tools they need to preserve them in the future.

See a preview of the show on Patric’s Facebook page.

Locally known for his sold-out “Laundry Camps” and as the owner of Mona Williams women’s clothing and gift boutique at the Mall of America, Patric has been waving the banner for the art of laundering for years. When he first launched his Laundry Camps, I interviewed him for Minnesota Monthly. Here’s an excerpt from our conversation:

Why did you decide to start a blog on cleaning?

So many people ask me, “How do I get out such and such?” It just kind of started happening, because I carry [high-end detergent brand] the Laundress [at Mona Williams], and people ask about how to care for the items they buy from me. I tell people that I wash my suits, I don’t dry clean anything. And then word spread. Then there’s also people who love to talk about laundry. There are a couple of people who talk about laundry in the context of a lifestyle blog, but no one who is doing a blog just on laundry, apart from laundry brands themselves.

How did you first develop a passion for laundry?

My mother and grandmother were meticulous about laundry—everything was ironed, everything was pressed, everything was perfect. When I was 10 years old, I wanted to iron my own clothes. It really happened when I got into college, because I wanted nice clothes but I didn’t have dry cleaning money, and I was getting a textiles degree, so I was lucky enough to be able to get advice from my professors.

How did you come up with the name, the Laundry Evangelist?

Oddly enough, the Star Tribune came up with the name. I was going to call the blog the Launderer, someone said, “No you’re proclaiming your love for laundry, so you should be the Laundry Evangelist. It suits you.”

I hear you’re not a fan of dry cleaning. Is it really possible to hand- or machine-wash items that say “dry-cleaning only” on their tags?

I haven’t gone to the dry cleaner in three years. The manufacturer wants you to enjoy your garment for the lifetime of the garment, and the dry cleaner will do it appropriately. So they put it on there because they don’t want you to ruin the garment. A lot of care tags in Europe will tell you how to wash things, because Europeans are more familiar with washing more delicate fabrics.

You also are anti-bleach. What’s your alternative?

The problem with bleach is it’s so harsh. It may get the result you want, but it’s so hard on the garment. You can use hydrogen peroxide or an oxygen-based cleaner. The Laundress makes one.

What are your top three laundry tips?

I’ll give you five. Button everything up before you wash it (it will reduce the abrasion, which will make your clothing last longer), use the shortest possible cycle in the washing machine; use less detergent, because I can promise you’re using too much; pre-treat everything—I keep a bottle of vinegar nearby, it’s a great stain remover and it’s not hard on your clothes; and don’t bake your clothes in the dryer, because it’s hard on your clothing.

The Laundry Guy will be available to stream Wednesday, March 31. The first episode also will air on HGTV on March 31 at 9pm CST. Learn more at hgtv.com. You can also buy his book, Laundry Love, on Amazon.

On view: "Papier" at American Swedish Institute

It’s not every day that an international touring art and fashion exhibition lands in Minneapolis. And after nearly a year that lacked our usual art and culture experiences due to COVID-19, this month’s opening of Papier at the American Swedish Institute is the deep breath of fresh air we all need—especially in the midst of a very cold Minnesota winter. The new exhibition showcasing the eye-popping paper couture of Polish-born, Stockholm-based artist-designer Bea Szenfeld alongside the evocative illustrations of Swedish artist-author Stina Wirsén.

IMG_9073.jpg

Papier was first exhibited at Lidköping ArtHall in Sweden before heading to the House of Sweden, Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C. in February 2020. This staging marks the second time the exhibition is being hosted in the U.S., but this presentation is truly one of a kind. One of the things I love about seeing exhibitions at the American Swedish Institute is its distinctive Turnblad Mansion wing. The Turnblad is a turn-of-the-20th-century historic, restored mansion built in the French Chateauesque style by Swedish immigrants Swan and Christina Turnblad, a successful publisher of a Swedish-language newspaper. Unlike most box-like museum spaces, filled with white, pristine walls, the mansion has its own charming features, such as and grand staircases and stately sitting rooms. Only in Minneapolis can you see one of Szenfeld’s cascading paper dresses in the same room as an antique enamel-tiled fireplace. A truly whimsical pairing!

The artists’ work also pairs wonderfully together, the undulating, organic paper shapes of Szenfeld’s work playing off of the expressive watercolors and illustrations of Wirsén—many of which span entire walls of the museum. Szenfeld’s work continuously pushes the convention of both paper and fashion, with some pieces rendered in origami folds, and others made from thousands of individual pieces put together. In this new series, Szenfeld is said to be have been inspired by origami and Arte Povera, an Italian art movement during the late 1960s and early 1970s that saw artists exploring common materials and unconventional methods.

The exhibition is now on view during museum hours, and you must make a reservation to see the exhibition due to COVID-19 restrictions. I actually really enjoy the opportunity to see the exhibition without the usual crowds. These pieces really get a chance to breathe when you can be alone in a room with them. You can also register for a virtual tour of the exhibition with ASI's curators and artists. Tours take place the first Friday of every month.

“Papier” is on view February 6–July 11. Hours are Thursday–Sunday, 10am–4pm; advance, timed reservations are required to visit the museum and can be made at www.ASImn.org or by calling 612-871-4907 during museum hours. Tickets are $12 for adults, free for members and children under 6; discounts are available for older kids, students and seniors.

ON VIEW:

On view: Papier at American Swedish Institute
A juncture between art and fashion, Papier is an international touring exhibition showcasing artist-designer Bea Szenfeld’s striking paper couture—dresses and other sculptural fashion items made entirely from paper and worn by such pop icons as Lady Gaga and Björk—united with artist-author Stina Wirsén’s evocative and colorful illustrations. Papier has made its Midwest debut at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis (in one of only two U.S. stagings). Bea continuously pushes the convention of both paper and fashion; some pieces are origami folds, others consist of thousands of individual pieces put together. Inspired by origami and Arte Povera–an Italian art movement during the late 1960s and early 1970s that saw artists exploring common materials and unconventional methods–the series of beautifully impractical creations feature thousands of paper sheets, layered in sculptural arrangements. Stay tuned for updates regarding the opening and virtual experiences around this exhibition. On view February 6–July 11. Hours are Thursday–Sunday, 10am–4pm; advance, timed reservations are required to visit the museum and can be made at www.ASImn.org or by calling 612-871-4907 during museum hours.

NEW THIS WEEK:

Breaking Silence: Design for a Changing World
The University of Minnesota College of Design’s graduating apparel design seniors aren’t able to have their annual fashion show due to COVID, so they’ve found new ways to present their senior collections. That includes a partnership with the Katherine E. Nash Gallery on the U of MN campus that shows the designs presented in a gallery setting in thoughtful installations. While closed to the public, you can view the collections on their Instagram account, instagram.com/umndesign, but U of MN staff, faculty and students may make an appointment to visit the show in person. Additionally, students are planning a photo shoot of their work and a digital showcase is set for April. Previously, ticket sales from the fashion show helped fund the photo shoot; in lieu of that funding, the students are doing a fundraiser.
