This is a special newsletter supplement in support of Tubman Center.
Last week, I was among those who were invited to gather at Maison Margaux in the North Loop to learn more about Tubman Center’s mission and their current “Great Dreams” Capacity Campaign. I’ve known that they’ve done great work for those suffering from domestic violence in the Twin Cities for years and their Harriet’s Closet shop (which outfits adults and kids in new and gently used clothing at no cost), so it was great learning even more about their mission from their leadership team including Tubman CEO Jennifer Polzin and campaign co-chairs Jake Blumburg and Junita Flowers, who touched on her experience as a survivor of domestic violence.
Domestic violence is an issue that touches everyone—either as a survivor or as a family member or friend of a survivor. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experience some form of physical violence by an intimate partner (Source: National Coalition Against Domestic Violence).
As part of Tubman’s current campaign, they have a goal of gathering 50,000 email addresses from the community to help spread awareness and ways to get involved leading up to October, which is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In addition to emergency domestic violence shelters, Tubman provides additional programs and support to provide safety, hope, and healing to women, children and families in crisis, with additional projects including a new pet shelter project. (Nearly 1 in 4 domestic violence victims return to an abusive situation due to fear over their pet’s safety.)
So how can you help? It’s easy—just email me at jahna.peloquin@gmail.com and let me know you’d like to have your email address added to their mailing list. For every email address collected, $1 is matched by donors.* Learn more about Tubman’s great mission and their current campaign at www.tubman.org.
Thank you to the event co-hosts Stephanie Dillon and Maison Margaux for hosting! I strongly recommend checking out Maison Margaux, it’s such a fabulous space with delicious French brasserie-style food and drinks.
*Email addresses will be collected solely for the purpose of Tubman’s campaign.
