Plastic Rapt: A History of Designing Forever
We have a complex relationship with plastic. We can’t seem to live without it and it has many beneficial (and sometimes life-saving) uses. On the other hand, it’s the leading cause of pollution to our planet, doesn’t break down naturally, and is expensive to recycle. (In fact, less than 10% of all plastic is said to be recycled.) The Goldstein Museum of Design’s Plastic Rapt: A History of Designing Forever exhibition acknowledges both plastic’s extreme versatility as well as its inherently detrimental qualities. The exhibition will include many “faux” objects from the Goldstein’s collection made from celluloid, including decorative combs and fans imitating tortoise shell, amber and ivory. Bakelite, the first true synthetic plastic, had diverse applications, including jewelry, toys, radios, and the decorative handles for things like cocktail shakers. Free. On view through 9/25 @ Goldstein Gallery at 12 McNeal Hall, 1985 Buford Ave, St Paul, design.umn.edu
